A cargo ship on route between the island Læsø and the mainland, had to take a huge detour due to sea ice. This sea ice is apparently invisible to the satellites, judging from NOAA sea ice maps. Instead of taking the direct route, marked by a green line on the NOAA sea ice map, it had to go way south of the island and up on the other side, marked with a red line.I am not sure why that much ice does not show up on the NOAA map. It could be that a certain thickness had yet not been reached. You can see a bit of yellow near Gothenburg, indicating sea ice there. Here they are now using icebreakers in order to get the ships in and out of Gothenburg Harbour. Source: Danish Radio P4 December 30th 2010 by Sara Røjkjær |
