R.A. Hall Elementary School fourth-grader Julisa Castillo has been named junior division champion for the 2010 National Science Fair.  Her project, “Disproving Global Warming,” beat more than 50,000 other projects submitted by students from all over the U.S.  Julisa originally entered her project in her school science fair before sending it to the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be judged at the national level.  The NSF panel of judges included former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, 14 recipients of the President’s National Medal of Science, and four former astronauts.

This is the day after the letter came out:  The story about the reward to the 4th grader, appears to be a hoax and strangely enough, it doesn't come as a surprise to me.  What initially caused me some concern, was that Al Gore was part of the panel.  Al normally keep away from any event that could harm his business.

When you teach children that "global warming", in terms of AGW, is the only true science, you sincerely portrait sincere scientists as idiots.  Even if there was any truth in AGW, the teaching of the IPCC/Gore doctrine (the summary for policy makers/an inconvenient truth) is in direct violation of the more established science, like the second law of thermodynamics.  A law we have relied on since 1824, the law about entropy.

If big Al had bothered to understand this, he might never had mislead young children and the rest of the world for that matter.  I could say like Al, that this is very complicated, but the basic fact is simple.  Bare over with me, if there are any flaws in my explanation, I am not a physicist, but neither is Al, so let me explain what I mean with this thermodynamics thing and what it concerns "global warming".

Flow of heat is going from warmer areas to colder until equilibrium is obtained.  If you continue to apply heat in one area, equilibrium will never take place.  The speed of the heat flow is determined by the difference in temperature between the warm and cold place, and the thermal resistance of the path between the two areas in question.

The radiation from the Sun, in the form of light, micro waves, etc., is heathing the Earth's surface and slightly the Earth's atmosphere.  As the Earth's surface is heated by the Sun, the surface is getting warmer than the atmosphere.  Therefore the heat from the warmer Earth surface will flow out towards the colder atmosphere in an attempt to create equilibrium.  As the atmosphere gets warmer, the flow from the atmosphere towards the empty space, will increase in speed.

The light from Sun to surface, will vary as clouds get in the way and reflect radiation from the Sun.  At time and place where it is night, the Earth's surface no longer receives light converted to heat, but there is accumulated heat from when it was day.  This heat will still try to flow towards the colder atmosphere with a speed determined by the difference in temperature between the surface and the atmosphere, and the thermal conductivity.  A clear sky in the night will seem to the heat as a temperature difference of about 273C + 13C, whereas a cloudy night will appear more like 40C + 13C and thus slow the rate of heat flow.

In general one could say:  at night the clods keep us warm and at daytime the clouds make us colder.  Clouds and water vapor is about 95% of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

With this fundamental knowledge in hand, there is something very wrong with Al Gore and Co.'s description where he explains that reflected heat from the Earth's surface is bouncing back from certain layers of the atmosphere.  The empty space is -273C, parts of the atmosphere in the order of -80C and the Earth's surface in the order of 13C.  There is no possible way you can get a few slightly heated CO2 molecules, which are still colder than the Earth's surface, to create a heat flow towards the surface - radiation from the heated molecules will seek the much colder empty space.

Could the 186 year old second law of thermodynamics, which we have so much relied on in all aspects, be wrong and have Al and IPCC rewritten the very foundation of our physics (Al Gore at least claims to have given us the Internet - thanks)?  Don't be bitter on me AL, I am sure you can find new, and hopefully better ways, to gain further popularity and wealth.

Let me finish by saying, that there is almost infinitively more to climate and eventual human involvement in the climate, than just this old settled law of physics.  However, it is equally important for the way you heat and insulate your home, as it is for the combustion engine, the weather and the climate.  To ignore it, is as ignorant as suggesting apples fall from the tree to the sky when it rains.
