Two satellites, Terra and Aqua, have since 2002 scanned the globe for large scale open fires. It is slightly worrying to see these satellites reveal most use of open fire in Africa's central belt. Apart from all the CO2 the fires produce, which might be a good thing, they also add huge amounts of smoke to the atmosphere.Clearing forest areas, in order to create farm land, has been the praxis for thousand of years. However, as one can read in Wikipedia: Disregard or ignorance of intrinsic value, lack of ascribed value, lax forest management and deficient environmental laws, are some of the factors that allow deforestation to occur on a large scale. In many countries, deforestation is an ongoing issue which is causing extinction, changes to climatic conditions, desertification, and displacement of indigenous people. Maybe this is inevitable, difficult to say, but while speculating about this, you could have a look the website providing graphical image of all the fires going on in the world. Maybe countries clearing this much forest should be a little more reluctant judging the industrialized nations so hard.
