Sentinel Times

Dear Editor,

In letters to the Sentinel Times Neil Rankine and Dr Tim Ealey proclaim knowledge of the climate and renewable energy which they assume eludes some of the world’s most eminent scientists and professional engineers.  Their views reflect the notion that “the end justifies the means” and in this case, harm done to the environment, economy and humanity is justified because they visualise that human emissions of CO2 will cause a catastrophic future.  To avoid this we must do as they say.

Whilst they are entitled to their beliefs and opinions I do not accept their claims.  I cannot predict the future and neither can anyone else.

Scientists expanding my understanding of climate and its variability include people like, Bob Foster a qualified palaeoclimatologist with considerable expertise; Professor Ian Plimer author of ‘Heaven + Earth, Global Warming:The Missing Science’; Professor Bob Carter and Professor David Bellamy.  Professor Bellamy is also well known for his contributions to the conservation of natural areas in Australia.

Dr Habibullo Abdussamatov head of the Russian ‘Astrometria’ space research project provides evidence that the Sun is a major influence on the Earth’s climate.  This widely held view is reinforced by observations that frozen CO2 polar caps on Mars, remote from human influence, not only advance and retreat with seasons but also show long term variations in harmony with changes to the Earth’s polar ice caps.

It is claimed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the “authority” on climate, that human emissions of CO2 are causing the planet to warm.  And also that the 2,500 scientists, who worked for the IPCC support this view, however very few of these people are actually scientists involved in any sort of climate research.   Furthermore some of that number, like Professor Lindzen and Vincent Grey, denounce the IPCC’s process and its conclusions.

The IPCC’s methodology and global warming claims are now so discredited that the US House of Representatives resolved to cut its funding.  House member Blaine Luetkemeyer said, “Scientists manipulated climate data, suppressed legitimate arguments in peer reviewed journals, and researchers were asked to destroy emails, so a small number of alarmists could continue their environmental agenda.”  He further said “700 acclaimed international scientists challenged the claims made by the IPCC, in a comprehensive report.  Princeton University physicist Dr Robert Austin who has published 170 scientific papers and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of sciences told a congress committee “that, unfortunately, climate has become a political science.  It is tragic the some perhaps well-meaning but politically motivated scientists who should know better have whipped up a global frenzy about a phenomenon which is statistically questionable at best.”

Scientists in USA are so concerned about the implications of unsupportable claims that CO2 is causing the Earth’s atmosphere to warm that 31,487 of them, including 9,029 with PhD’s, signed a petition (at www.petitionproject.org ) which states:
“We urge the United States Government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals.  The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.
There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption to the Earth’s climate.  Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.”

One can only imagine the total number of signatories if it was open to scientist from other countries to sign.
When the drought was at its peak in Australia, environmental organisations suppoting the global warming doctrine held a captive audience.   I remember Don Henry CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation saying in a TV news item, “we’re all gunna fry”.  Five years on nothing could be further from the truth.

Neil Rankine may advocate wind farms but when it comes to electric power generation I rely on the expertise and experience of engineers who have demonstrated competence in the field.   Peter Lang is a civil engineer with world wide experience with a variety of electrical power generation plants.  His analysis of wind power shows that because the wind speed varies the electricity generation is erratic and unpredictable and requires conventional power stations to ensure a constant supply of electricity resulting in very little, if any, CO2 savings.  Mr Lang also determined that the cost of wind turbines and the supporting infrastructure has been seriously underestimated and in reality is excessively costly.  These conclusions are supported by numerous electrical engineers throughout the world as well as economists like Alan Moran, Reg Brownell and Terry McCrann.

It is great to live in a democracy where I, Neil Rankine and Dr Tim Ealey, and others in the community, can feel free to express opinions and beliefs.  However it becomes a matter of concern when beliefs held by individuals extend to demands that people change the way they live and pay for the extravagant ill-conceived schemes of a minority.
The Bracks/Brumby governments were captives of the global warming doctrine with the following consequences.

Wind farms approved and constructed across Victoria with little regard for the environmental and economic consequences are now starting to cost taxpayers and consumers more than what was previously claimed.  The cost of additional major transmission lines to connect remote and dispersed wind farms to towns and cities and the cost of running the required back-up generators on standby was not considered during the approval process.  Consumers and taxpayers are paying for “green” electricity whether or not they chose to.
The Wonthaggi desalination plant was approved to provide a secure water supply when the alarmist climate predictions were for a permanently dryer climate.  This project will result in huge increases in water costs for consumers and taxpayers whether or not the water is ever needed.  To meet the electrical power demand of this plant and appease global warming enthusiasts the Bracks/Brumby government planned to provide it with wind generated electricity.

To add to this damage to the economy and environment the Federal Government, embracing the global warming ideology, intends to punish secondary and primary industry, commerce and householders through the introduction of a “Carbon Tax”.
With regard to the “end justifying the means” the evidence to support the claim that human emissions of CO2 is causing global temperatures to rise is so suspect that there is no need to strive toward a perceived “end”.   There is compelling evidence that wind turbines do not achieve their claimed purpose of reducing CO2 emissions so the “means” cannot be justified.

Quite simply, there is no good reason for allowing the destruction of wildlife and degradation of the environment.
When H. L. Mencken wrote “The urge to save humanity is always a false front for the urge to rule it.” I think he hit the nail on the head.
